Well, I've finally got down to doing this:











The fourth panel of my Faux Gogh chair is the one I've dreaded the most. When you take a real close look at Vincent Van Gogh's Irises, you can begin to understand what I mean. Every single one of his irises is unique. He obviously studied the flowers' shapes and movements when he interpreted them with twisting, curling strokes. The tangled web of irises, leaves and stems are enough to drive anyone mad.

So far, I've painted the yellow background and some of the long stems. Knowing when to quit (let the painting be for a while) is really important, and so that is why I have left it for now until I can complete the panel and be happy with what I've done.

Once I have completed the fourth panel, I will start on the finishing touches. For one thing, I need to paint the underside of the seat cushion; then there are a few details on the two side panels that need to be done and then it'll be completed. Finished. Done.

Then ... I'll be on the hunt for another chair to start the agony and torture all over again. I love this!

Day 10 is bound to be special

Here is a close up peek of the treasure my dear friend Arlene created for the very last day of the 2009 Canadian Valentine ART Swap.

It's a hand bound cloth Shabby Chic book she made for us to pop into our purses and whenever
inspiration strikes, we're supposed to snatch these out and start doodling, scribbling, whatever. That Arlene always trying to get us to do something! Not that I'm complaining, I think this book is amazing and the perfect way to finish up this Valentine Swap. I hope you've enjoyed seeing all the treasures along the way, and I'm sure that at least some of us will be up for another swap sometime soon. There is some talk of us Canadian Chicks doing some sort of swap for Mother's Day. I can't wait!

Back to Day 7 for a moment ...

I couldn't reveal Sabina's Bonus Day gift for the Canadian Valentine ART Swap until now because we had to wait until everyone had opened their gifts. That was really hard, I must say, because half of the fun of these swaps is sharing the beautiful work of the other people in the swap.

Here then is the 6"x8" canvas that Sabina made for me using acrylics, glitter rhinestones, lace and fabric flowers. At first glance, I immediately thought of the beauty of snowflakes late at night falling silently to the ground. Each one is unique and beautiful, untouched. So when I look at this piece, I will think of Sabina and peaceful winter nights. I'm also thinking a piping hot cup of tea should be involved as well :)

Retro ATC appears on Day 9

An funky hanging ATC was the gift that Nicolette presented the Canadian Valentine ART Swap on Day 9. The theme is LOVE of course; mine looks like a retro drugstore novel. Notice it says 15 cents in the upper left-hand corner ~ I love that. On the reverse side, there is "Desire", a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Love creation for Day 8

Oops almost forgot Day 7

Day 7 was "my day" ~ yay! It's alway exciting when the day that your gifts are to be open by the other people in the swap. (I also got to open Sabina's gift which I can't talk about until the swap is over because some of the other people haven't opened her gift yet).

I created Shabby Chic Keys
for Day 7 of the All-Canadian Valentine ART Swap, which you can take a look at here.

Ingredients for Shabby Chic Keys:
a collection of old keys, Golden gesso (white), appropriate sayings and flat marbles (or whatever the real name is for them), a trusty glue gun, sparkly rope-ish stuff, gemstones and a touch of glitter.

Assigning suitable says was a lot of fun. A few of the sayings I used included: "More Glitter", "Jewellery Queen",
"Tweet Tweet" and "A friend loves at all times".

Most keys are threaded with ribbon or lace. Two of the keys I made into pins that can be attached to a surface or be worn as a brooch.

I like these little creations so much that I may actually make one for myself.

Handstitched with love on Day 6

A crazy quilt heart that could have been crafted a hundred years ago (but wasn't) is the gift that we opened today, Day 6. Laura carefully hand stitched each of the participants of the Canadian Valentine Swap a lover-ly aromatherapy heart.

The photos here show both sides of the heart she made for me. Don't you just love the lace and ~ be still my heart ~ rhinestones?! The heart also has a refreshing citrus scent to it (one of my favourite scents)! As if all that wasn't enough, an adorable Valentine themed magnet was included as an extra little surprise.

Day 5 beauties

Vanessa created some beautiful packages of seeds from her flower garden for Day 5 of the Canadian Valentine Swap. Look at the mini water colour paintings she painted on each package. Aren't they pretty?

I can't wait to plant them in my backyard once the ground is unfrozen and ready. They should do well here because they come from plants that already live in the same planting region as we do. Hopefully my gardening "skills" won't hinder their growth too much ;)

Day 3 and Day 4 goodies

Sharing our hearts

After a long lull of creativity, I'm taking part in a Mixed Media Valentine Art Swap. This particular swap is made up of a group of eleven Canadian art friends. We are a group of diverse ages and talents. Many of us haven't even participated in an art swap before. We've just started opening our gifts ...

Day 1 featured artist is Mar. In creating the bookmarks she made for everyone, Mar took the "likes" of everyone into consideration. The one she made for me has a definite vintage feel to it. The little tags at the top of the bookmarks move which amuses me to no end. On the flip side of the bookmark, she added my name.

Day 2 featured artist is Holly, who just happens to be Arlene's sister. I would call Holly a master jewellery maker. Look at the intricate asymmetrical earrings she made for me ~ as you can see artistic flair must run in the family. These earrings (which are pearl, austrian crystals, pink quartz, and rhodolite and silver) are the most beautiful pair of danglelies I've ever owned. Unfortunately the photo doesn't do them justice.

Tomorrow, my friend Martha will be the featured artist.

Cool present to show off

Just had to show off an awesome gift I was given this Christmas by someone who obviously knows me very well! It's a gorgeous box with Van Gogh's sunflowers. I think I actually squealed with delight when I ripped of the wrapping paper off this one! Inside I discovered four china mugs depicting four of Vincent's paintings: Irises, Vincent's Bedroom in Arles, Sunflowers and Langlois Bridge at Arles. Hopefully someday soon I can pull out these special cups to serve a piping hot cup of tea and crumpets to a friend or two or three. Maybe it'll be you. Happy New Year everyone!

Can't forget the 13th day of Christmas!

Lelainia Lloyd created a package of pure fun for the 13th day of Christmas (which occurred for me, on the 7th day when everyone else opened my gift). Lelainia's gift was stuffed full of ephemera (inspiring stuff to get me going on some art projects in the new year), a yummy looking recipe, a Christmas CD (which I've played almost nonstop since I opened it) ...

... and an exquisite Shabby Chic-ish star which predominately hangs on my little pink feather Christmas tree.

This 12 Days of Christmas swap has been a lot of fun with such talented artists taking part.

In a couple hours, it will be Christmas Day.

7th Day of Christmas & the Ties that Bind

The 7th day of Christmas is my day to give back to all the wonderful artists participating in the 12 Days of Christmas. It's just after midnight here, and I wanted to post this so that it would be up for the overseas gals.
It took me the longest time to decide what to make for this year's swap. Anyone who knows me, knows that I have a serious Sewing Phobia, so I am very proud of myself. I stretched real hard, and jumped completely out of the box by making these little Tie Pockets. Each gift was created by using an old neckties from the the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s! I found some of these delightful ties at the ReUse Centre, one was my dad's, and a couple I snuck out of my husband's closet! Once I had assembled 12 ties, I tried as best I could to match everyone's colour preferences. Also whenever possible, I added embellishments I felt each person may like. My friend Shelly, was kind enough to lend me her sewing machine, and I was off ... going where I hadn't gone since eighth grade home ec. class ... to use a scary, scary sewing machine. Argh! The first couple ties I made were pretty rough. (You'll probably know if I made yours first ... or maybe you won't *smile*) However, as I went along, I actually started to enjoy myself. I decided that straight lines weren't that important, which took a lot of pressure off, too. Each Tie Pocket has a button with Velcro fasteners to keep them securely closed. Finally, I made 3 cards to stuff into the completed Tie Pockets: Permission to Play, Permission to Make Mistakes and Artist of the Year. I had photos of some of the 12 day artists, so for those folks, I added "Photo ID" (or would that be Faux-toe ID?) to the Artist of the Year cards, just in case they have to use it at an airport or something. MOO cards seemed to be an obvious choice for one last item to stuff into the Tie Pockets for my friends ~ each MOO card features some art piece that I've done in the past. Finally, I wrapped the gifts in simple old-fashioned tissue paper with sparkles and added little Christmas tags featuring little children and angels (another great find from ReUse). I hope everyone likes the Tie Pockets I made them and I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.
Now please excuse me while I secretly open the mysterious #13 gift from Lelainia ....

By the way, I made an extra Artist of the Year card for my son Zachary because he is fast becoming an
excellent artist in his own right!
